The Land that Needs a Magic Wand

The Author of this text has lived in Saudi Arabia for 6 years, 2 months, and 0 days.

The gray, lifeless sky presses down on the vast brown plains. The scents of fake winter, the melancholy fragrances of bare, dry earth, fallen leaves and dead flowers make the stagnant evening air duller and heavier. Amid the sluggish and erratic individuals walks a perfect stranger. Counting his footsteps, looking into the effaced figures disappearing like a mirage in the desert. Questions and anxiety kept haunting him. Do I belong here? Despite the fact that I am a child of the universe. Where do I go from here? How did things get so bad? I have to be careful. He had heard worrying stories about women being battered and physically abused. Many of the most disgraceful being told of a so-called contemporary society with shameful and shocking practices. But it is more that women issue. It is a political, economical, social, and moral problem. Most of all a question of human rights. Its impact is hard to underestimate, destroying families, fuelling hatred and providing a fat new source of rebellion. Everything takes place in a shadowy world where the victims and witnesses are intimidated into silence. It paints an abrasive picture of mistreatment and cruelty. There is no justice here. A world apart. He never thought this was possible. These people are monsters. They act in the name of God. They are lying to God, to others, but mostly to themselves. They should burn in hell's sizzling flames. Another journey has just begun. A passage to an unknown destination. A lengthy crossing filled with distress along with deception. He stops for a while, takes a long pause. He starts walking again without looking over his shoulders. He is ready for another adventure.

Don't Drink and Drive

Arrive alive. Don't ever drink and drive.
I took this picture in London back in mid 90's. Although the proportion of crashes that are alcohol-related has dropped dramatically in recent decades, there are still far too many such preventable accidents. Unfortunately, in spite of great progress, alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious problem that tragically effects many victims annually.
Remember, don't ever, ever drive if you, or anyone else, thinks that you may have had too much to drink. And don't let anyone else. It's always safest not to drink and drive. A designated driver is always a must-not-forget plan.

Forza Azzurri

Before Euro 2008 started, I told my worrying Italian friend, Sebastjan Rijavec, a little story on the Forza Azzurri matches. They will lose Match One. Get even in Match Two. Win Match Three with 2 points. That's their practice. Last night, Andrea Pirlo (21) and Daniele Di Rossi (10) proved me right.
This coming Sunday 22, they will face a tough team but eventually move up to the quarter finals.

Come What Day?

I took this picture few weeks after the cowardly assassination of Mr Gebran Ghassan Tueni. My dear friend Rachid Kanaan was kind enough to post it on his blog back then.
The blood stream is long. Lebanon has suffered over 200,000 casualties, and twice that number wounded. To this date, 17,000 are left out missing with an unknown fate. And the saddest part is that most of these killings were carried out by the Lebanese people to the Lebanese people.

The Londoner

Lea, my 14-year old daughter took this great picture on our way up to Kefraya. A lovely spot. A perfect outing for a copious meal and hearty wine. You can complete it with a stroll in the vineyard and top it with a nap on the grass. A recommended-world-class resort.
